Improved Hand Feeling that Meets Consumer Preferences
Consumers identified softness and smoothness (less skin irritation) as important considerations for products used against their skin. In order to have Nepia facial tissues respond to these consumer preferences we have pursued improved softness and smoothness.
1) Pursuing Softness
One of the processes used in tissue paper manufacture is called “beating” in which the fibers are made fluffy to bring out their strength. By using certain methods during this beating process, it is possible to add softness to the fibers.
Chemicals such as softening agents are also added to increase the paper’s softness, and optimizing the application of these chemicals is another way to improve softness.
2) Pursuing Smoothness
In order to improve smoothness (reduce skin irritation) we have successfully decreased the unevenness (roughness) of the tissue’s surface. Tissues are made primarily from softwood and hardwood pulp, but the shapes of these fibers differ significantly. We developed the technology to increase smoothness while still maintaining strength by discovering the optimum blend of softwood and hardwood pulp and leveraging their respective advantages.

Techniques to Improve Softness—High-density Soft Embossing—
Increasing the amount of embossing on bathroom tissue further relaxes the fibers, which are the source of the paper’s stiffness, and increases softness.
A high-density soft emboss is applied in a ripple pattern that draws out maximum softness.
The same high-density soft emboss ripple pattern is used on the surface as on the single ply. Then an even finer high-density soft emboss is applied to the surface and the combination of these further increases softness.
High-density soft embossing increases softness, achieving a result that is both gentle and strong. This bathroom tissue is also ideal for use with bidet-type warm water washing toilet seats.
