150 Years of History

SCROLL DOWN

Birth of modernized industry (1873-1909)

The origin of the Oji Group can be traced back to the establishment of Shoshi Kaisha by Eiichi Shibusawa, who is known as the father of the modern Japanese economy and was involved in the establishment of numerous companies. Shibusawa believed that "paper manufacturing and printing businesses are the source of civilization," and he had high aspirations to supply domestically produced paper, which at the time could only be produced in foreign countries. At Shibusawa's suggestion, The Shoshi Kaisha was established in 1873 (Meiji 6) and In 1875 (Meiji 8), the mill was built in Oji-mura, Tokyo (now Oji, Kita-ku, Tokyo). The Shoshi Kaisha that would become the foundation of modern civilisation would eventually become Oji Paper and underpin the development of industry throughout Japan.

Establishment of domestic self-sufficiency system and the era of "Dai Oji" (1873-1909)

In order to meet the growing demand for paper, we sought the forests, water, and vast land necessary for paper production and opened the Tomakomai Mill in Hokkaido, bringing together the best of our technologies to establish a domestic self-sufficiency system for newsprint. In 1933, in order to respond to and develop in a new era, our company, Fuji Paper and Karafuto Kogyo, the top three companies in the industry, merged to form a giant company that accounted for nearly 90% of total paper production in Japan. The war, however, cast a heavy shadow over the industry.

From the postwar split into three companies to high economic growth (1946-1972)

After the war, Great Oji was split into three companies and the name Oji Paper was lost, and became Tomakomai Paper. Nevertheless, in the midst of postwar reconstruction, it boldly took on the challenge of building the Kasugai Mill, which was equipped with the world's most advanced continuous KP digester at the time. Honshu Paper, which would later merge with our company, developed technology to deink used recovered newspaper, paving the way for the utilization of recovered paper. As times entered a period of rapid economic growth, the company name finally returned to Oji Paper.

Environmental responsiveness and global expansion (1973-1999)

In the 1970s, people's lives became more affluent, and major changes in people's lifestyles began to take place. As demand for paper continued to increase, expectations for paper grew and expanded beyond newsprint and printing paper. New products such as white board, thermal paper, and household paper were developed one after another, and paper materials came to play an active role in various aspects of our daily lives. At the same time, we also focused our efforts on measures to prevent pollution at our mills.

Transformation of business structure and expansion of global operations (2000-2022)

After experiencing a bubble economy, Japan fell into a long recession. As people became more concerned about issues directly related to people's lives, such as reducing waste and protecting the environment, newsprint was made lighter and the use of recycled paper in printing and copying paper was expanded. Against this backdrop, companies formerly affiliated with Oji Paper, which were spun off after the war, merged to form a strong and stable business. However, with the progress of digitization, paper production began to decline after 2008.
While the domestic market has been shrinking, we have strongly promoted overseas expansion, and the overseas sales ratios to total sales has reached nearly 40% (in FY2022). In 2012, we transitioned to a holding company structure and changed our name to Oji Holdiings. Global warming countermeasures, ocean plastic problems, and other global issues have come to the fore, and "fossil-free raw materials" and "sustainability" have become keywords. In this context, expectations for paper products and wood resources are higher than ever. Making the most of the technologies cultivated over its long history, the Oji Group is also focusing on the development of new materials.
