Nature Positive Management

01 Nature positive management that the Oji Group commits to achieve

The Oji Group's Purpose and sustainable forest management

In 2022, we formulated the Oji Group's Purpose as follows.

Grow and manage sustainable forests, develop and deliver the products from renewable forests,
and Oji will bring this world a brighter future filled with hope.

Forest resources form the foundation of our business. We have spent a long time developing forests in accordance with our philosophy: Those who use trees have the responsibility to plant trees. At present, we procure wood resources sustainably from properly managed forests and operate environmentally friendly bio-businesses using this wood.

The core of our business is the sustainable forest management we have continued for 150 years. We have sustainably managed forest to date, and we will continue to do so, as we work to implement nature positive management while coexisting harmoniously with nature.

Moving toward the evolution of nature positive management and the era of natural capital accounting

Currently, the global environment is facing the problems of climate change and loss of biodiversity. We must implement nature positive management which enables our business activities to contribute to the enrichment of nature. Further, in recent years, natural capital accounting has begun to become institutionalized. It measures the economic value of natural capital, which includes forests, soil, water, the atmosphere and biological resources.

By achieving our Purpose, we will continue to evolve the nature positive management we have continued to implement for more than 100 years, and act in anticipation of the natural capital accounting era.

Building a global framework for cooperation

As a nature positive management initiative, we are actively involved in global cooperation and the construction of a framework for nature positive management that goes beyond boundaries between industries and countries.

In September 2023, we established the International Sustainable Forestry Coalition (ISFC) together with forest-related companies around the world. To solve global issues, we will work together with other member companies, proactively making statements at COP and other international conferences.

We have also joined the world economic forum. We are resolved to help build a global framework for the transition to a society with a circular bioeconomy.
