Wood-Derived Biomass Plastics

Replacing conventional petroleum-based plastics with sustainable biomass plastics can reduce fossil fuel based CO2 emissions in the atmosphere and combat global warming.
Regular biomass plastics are mainly manufactured from sugar cane, corn and other edible materials. We are developing plastics manufactured from wood-derived pulps that are not in competition with food because trees are inedible.
The development of pulp-derived polylactic acid and polyethylene was adopted as the project, “Structuring and demonstrating a system to recycle plastics and other resources and support a decarbonized society” by the Ministry of the Environment in 2019.

Cellulose Composites

Introducing pulp into plastics can improve their properties.Pulp, which is entirely derived from biomass and highly biodegradable, is the optimal reinforcement material for biomass plastics and biodegradable plastics.Compounding pulp into conventional petroleum-based plastics can reduce the consumption of plastics and fossil fuel based CO2 emissions into the atmosphere.

SILBIO BARRIER, Barrier Paper Material

We have developed SILBIO BARRIER, a barrier paper material that will aid in the reduction of plastic waste.Despite being a paper material, SILBIO BARRIER prevents oxygen, water vapor and other outside substances from entering, and controls the deterioration of its contents.
Sample work has started since April 2019 with the aim to commercialize the product early.The performance of SILBIO BARRIER is equivalent to that of regular barrier films. We are also developing a higher-grade material with equivalent barrier performance to deposition films.

(1) Composition of SILBIO BARRIER

The barrier layer on the paper material suppresses the permeation of oxygen and water vapor.


(2) Barrier performance of SILBIO BARRIER

The performance of SILBIO BARRIER is equivalent to that of regular barrier films. We pursue to the barrier performance comparable to that of deposition films.


(3) Expected usage of SILBIO BARRIER

Raw materials are carefully selected for various kinds of application.


Lid & Package Made from Pulp

We are developing a lid made from pulp, a renewable resource.It is resistant to water and can be used with paper cups for hot and cold drinks.Replacing existing plastic lids will contribute to the reduction of plastic waste.
The developed product involves the use of a precise pulp-molding technology and will be made applicable to many different packages.
